Self-care, coping, and emotion regulation in university students
Main Article Content
Abstract
College life, in and of itself, is stressful. If we add the impact of a global pandemic, with the consequent adaptations that it has entailed, we face a highlycritical moment in thelives of universitystudents. This article exploresself-care behaviors, coping strategies for academic stress, and emotional intelligence of students in health-related fields during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, it analyzes the factors that predict the frequency of engaging in self-care behaviors in this population. In this non-experimental cross-sectional quantitative study, 170 university students in Ecuador completed an anonymous online questionnaire between April and July 2020. The results indicate significant relationships between self-care, emotional intelligence, and academic stress coping methods. The participants presented average frequencies of self-care behaviors, coping with academic stress, and emotional intelligence. This article also identifies that emotional regulation predicts the practice of self-care and highlights the importance of having effective self-care and emotional intelligence strategies as they influence academic stress management.
