Psychoeducational intervention in informal caregivers of people with dementia.
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: Dementia is one of the main causes of disability and dependency among elderly population worldwide, producing a high bio-psycho-emotional impact not only for those who suffer it, but also for their caregivers. The exponential growth in the prevalence of this type of pathology means that more and more people without specific training have to take care of their relatives. The consequences of facing a situation of increasing overload have a negative impact on the caregiver, who must also be cared for and advised during the disease process. To meet this need, psychoeducation focused on personal self-care can be an effective therapeutic tool when it comes to teaching caregivers how to deal with patient care, following the premise that “learning to take care of ourselves will allow us to take better care the other”. Objective: to review the existing evidence on the effectiveness of self-care training as part of psychoeducational interventions that are aimed at informal/family caregivers of people with dementia. Methodology: in the present work an umbrella review or meta-review of systematic reviews has been carried out in which the efficacy of interventions that include the self-care component are studied. Results: evidence is collected in favor of the efficacy of psychoeducational interventions that include the self-care component, although with a low level of statistical significance. Conclusion: it is necessary to deepen the research because, although evidence has been found in favor, other types of interventions or combinations of therapies have proven to be more effective.
