Main stressors and vulnerability profile to academic stress in university students during the confinement period
Main Article Content
Abstract
For many students, university years can be perceived as stressful experience as they face changes in the academic and social spheres. The present study aimed to identify the main sources of academic stress in university students and to identify how personal or environmental variables are related to greater vulneability to this kind of stress. 2,224 students completed a digital questionnaire during the university closure related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sociodemographic data, academic stress levels (CEAU) and self-esteem data (Rosenberg Self-esteem scale) were collected. Results showed that women presented higher levels of academic stress, as well as low levels of self-esteem. On the other hand, it was surprising that students of the Engineering and Architecture field reported the lowest levels of academic stress. Among these results, the importance of the
stressor related to employability and prospects stands out, with higher scores than in previous studies, which could be explained by the job instability caused by COVID-19 crisis. Knowing the profile of the most vulnerable students to academic stress and the main stressors that they face, facilitates the design of strategies to provide them with the necessary tools to cope with the challenges that arise in this developmental period.
