The vivencial effect of metaphor: the power of images in psychopedagogical intervention

Abstract

The great therapeutic power of the metaphor has been demonstrated by the applied research conducted by our team during the last twenty years. This paper summarizes the assumptions underlying the intervention model we have built and developed through research spanning more than two thousand cases of children and adolescents with emotional problems. We will explain some of these cases using the metaphors with which we have obtained the best results. As a general conclusion, we note that the symbols transmitted by any metaphor greatly help children because they reframe their experiences and have a positive impact on their personal identity, selfesteem and, ultimately, in their maturity and emotional wellbeing.
