Abstract

The high mortality in Portugal with regard to cerebrovascular accident (CVA), representing 9.9% of mortality in 2018, according to the National Institute of Statistics (2020), prompted us to carry out this action-research. This article therefore intends to present the potential of neuropsychological rehabilitation, through an action-research focused on an elderly individual (70 years old) assessed by 5 psychometric instruments: TELPI, GDS, MOCA, IFS and BADS that measure pre-morbid intelligence, depression, executive, attentional and emotional functions, the level of cognitive impairment, as well as to assess the daily difficulties that arise as a result of mental deterioration. In conclusion, the patient, despite his adverse condition, recovered his deteriorated abilities, mainly through the metacognitive strategies of self-verbalization, and the establishment of an empathic relationship between the clinical team, the patient and his family proved to be important, as well as an assertive and proactive involvement during the neuropsychological rehabilitation process.
