Abstract

Hope is a fundamental dimension of the human experience, influencing not only quality of life but also resilience when facing challenges and adversity. In nursing practice, the management of hope emerges as a crucial aspect in the provision of care, especially in palliative care settings, where the complexity of the transition process of the person and their family requires a holistic and sensitive approach. This research aimed to identify the challenges, strategies, and nursing interventions in the management of hope in palliative care. A qualitative study was carried out through a narrative review, searching for publications on the subject through articles published after 2010. Given the scarcity of discussions on the topic, this study mainly sought to explore thematically and problematise gaps in scientific knowledge. The analysis of 9 articles and 1 thesis allowed us to identify challenges, strategies, and nursing interventions in the management of hope. Hope is a dynamic process with realistic goals adjusted to the context and experience of the person in palliative care and their family. The management of hope is a focus of attention in nursing practice, based on recognising the experiences, potential and social support of the person and their family, and is achieved through hope-promoting strategies. Nursing professionals use a set of specific strategies to promote and maintain hope in palliative care patients and their families. These strategies range from adopting empathetic and welcoming communication to providing emotional and spiritual support tailored to the individual needs of the person and her/his family. This global approach aims not only to mitigate physical suffering but also to provide psychological and spiritual comfort throughout the palliative care process, highlighting the importance of integrality in caring for people in a palliative care situation.
