Abstract

Problematic Internet and mobile phone use represents a growing phenomenon with relevant implications for young people’s digital behaviour. To carry out the statistical analysis, the following objectives were defined: (1) to examine the differences in cyberaggression according to gender and age; (2) to explore the correlation between problematic Internet and mobile phone use and cyberaggression; and (3) to determine whether problematic Internet and mobile phone use predict cyberaggression. The sample consisted of 1216 students from the University of Extremadura  (68,24 % female and 31,76 % male), aged 17-24 years (M = 21,46; SD = 3,83), selected by stratified sampling. Results indicated that males had significantly higher levels of cyber aggression. In addition, a negative correlation was observed between age and cyberaggression. The correlations between problematic Internet and mobile phone use and cyberaggression were positive and significant. Regression analysis showed that both problematic Internet use and mobile phone use predict cyberaggression, with mobile phone use being the strongest predictor. It is concluded that problematic use of digital technologies influences cyberaggression, so it is recommended to implement prevention programmes in university contexts, especially aimed at the first years of university.
