Influence of instagram and tiktok on body image in a sample of adolescents
Main Article Content
Abstract
Social networks have been booming in recent years, especially Instagram and Tiktok, which are the most widely used by adolescents. Physical changes can generate alterations in the body image and satisfaction of adolescents, who are the most vulnerable to continuous exposure to images on these social networks. The main objective of the study was to analyse the relationship between the use of the networks and body image satisfaction, as well as to analyse the interaction between sex and the use of Instagram and Tiktok on body image satisfaction in a sample of adolescents. Participants were 208 adolescents of whom 53.7% (n=118) were female and 46.3% (n=90) were male, aged 11-17 years (M=14.39, SD=1.23). The Sociodemographic and Social Network Survey and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relation Questionnaire-Spanish version were used. Significant results were obtained between the use of Tiktok and the scales of evaluation and orientation towards appearance and health concern and between the use of Instagram and the scales of physical condition and evaluation and orientation towards appearance, as well as differences according to sex and Instragram in men, but not in women. The use of social media and technologies in adolescence plays an important role that may affect how adolescents self-perceive their physical appearance.
