School refusal behavior in adolescents and its relationship with school anxiety
Main Article Content
Abstract
The behavior of school refusal is a significant issue observed in educational centers worldwide. This conduct is prevalent among children and adolescents and can lead to emotional, psychophysiological, and behavioral problems. In order to understand this phenomenon in all its dimensions, it is necessary to consider the link between this construct and other associated factors, such as school anxiety. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the differences in school anxiety based on levels of school refusal, specifically regarding Factor III of the SRAS-C questionnaire: “Seeking attention from significant others.” The sample consisted of 1920 students enrolled in grades 10 to 12 (ages 15 to 18) in three public institutions in Ecuador. Data were analyzed using the Student’s t-test, and the instruments used to measure the variables were “Inventario de Ansiedad Escolar” (IAES) and the “School Refusal Assessment Scale Revised for Children” (SRAS-R-C). The results confirmed the relationship between school anxiety and school refusal, as students with high scores in school refusal for “Seeking attention from significant others” also obtained higher scores in all analyzed school anxiety variables.
