Abstract

The present research was divided into two studies and was based on the Mayer and Salovey Emotional Intelligence Model (1997). In the first study, the Workgroup Emotional Intelligence Profile - short version (WEIPS) (Jordan and Lawrence, 2009) was adapted and adapted to the Portuguese population and evaluated for its internal consistency and temporal constancy. In the second study, the objective was to evaluate the dimensionality (as an approximate measure of factorial validity), the criterion validity, by the concurrent comparison with a parallel instrument already validated for Portugal (Trait Meta-Mood Scale - TMMS24 - Queiroz et al. )) and again check the internal consistency behavior. After the first study, the WEIP-S was renamed PIEGT16 (Emotional Intelligence Profile of the Working Group - 16 items). The sample of the first study consisted of 150 participants and the second study by 369 participants, all soccer players. In relation to study 1, good internal consistency values were obtained and the temporal constancy of the instrument was demonstrated, once significant correlations were obtained between the test and the retest. Regarding study 2, a tetra-factorial solution was extracted with a grouping of items equal to the original version (Jordan and Lawrence, 2009). Regarding the validity of concurrent criteria, although relatively low, the correlations between the two forms assumed statistical meaning, denoting criterion validity. The internal consistency maintained, in this second study, values within the recommended one. The results showed that the Portuguese version of the WEIP-S, now called PIEGT16, has good psychometric characteristics.
