Abstract

School refusal is a complex phenomenon that affects approximately between 5 and 28% of children and teenagers. The aim of this study is to provide a bibliographical review of the published scientific production on school refusal during the period between 2004-2012. The database used was Psycinfo, obtaining a sample of 86 scientific papers. Articles published in any field of knowledge are exposed with the purpose of spreading their contributions to the development of research. There are quantifiable aspects of bibliography production that are being studied by Bibliometrics, including variables such as: year of publication, the journals, the most productive authors, the range of coauthorship and research topics, providing an analysis developed content in each of these lines. The results indicate a progressive increase in the indexes of scientific productivity, highlighting the increase in publications over the last three years of the time period reviewed. Fields of knowledge of scientific interest have been the treatment of school refusal and the risk factors related to absenteeism, while other research measuring instruments as school refusal or truancy and its conceptual definition need to consolidate their research increasing the amount of work focused on the study. This study provides a representative view of the current state of research on school refusal, as well as analysis of the prevailing topics of the study and those that require consolidation. Therefore, this study serves as a reference document for future researches focused on a child’s refusal to attend school.
