Abstract

Exam anxiety is an important personal and social problem that influences performance and personal development. The present article aims to reflect on the anxiety of exams and the importance of several variables associated with the difficulties experienced by students in the level of performance anxiety in the exams and, consequently, in their school performance. The article begins by conceptually delimiting and explaining the symptomatology and variables associated with anxiety in exams in children, adolescents and adults. The emotional, physiological and cognitive components are evidenced and some comprehensive models for anxiety analysis are pointed out. Next, possible causes underlying school performance are mentioned, with particular emphasis on sociocognitive variables. It discusses the complex and multidimensional nature of this anxiety disorder and the attributional style of students with test anxiety. It is concluded that the anxiety to the situations of examinations should not be seen as a mere characteristic of the situation or of the student. It results not from the objective properties of the situation, but rather from the cognitive interpretation or evaluation that the student makes of it.
