Influence of contact with people with disabilities on university students' attitudes
Main Article Content
Abstract
Attitudes towards disability play a fundamental role in improving the inclusion of people with disabilities in society. Universities play a key role in shaping these attitudes, making higher education crucial for promoting inclusion and understanding diversity. This study investigates the influence of previous contact with people with disabilities and the feelings experienced in their presence on university students’ attitudes towards disability. A total of 399 university students from Extremadura, enrolled in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences, Occupational Therapy, and Early Childhood Education, participated in this comparative study. Attitudes were assessed using the Attitudes Towards People with Disabilities Scale for Professionals, administered to students in their first and final years of study. The results revealed significant variations in attitudes depending on previous contact with people with disabilities, with higher scores among students who had prior contact. The study highlights the role of practical experiences with people with disabilities in fostering positive attitudes. Specific courses on attitudes towards disability and practical training can promote inclusive educational practices among future health and education professionals.
