Relationship between problematic use of social networks, cybervictimization and cyberbullying in adolescence
Main Article Content
Abstract
Social networks are currently one of the most important spaces for socialisation in the lives of adolescents. However, problematic use can lead to cyberbullying and cybervictimisation in many of them. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between problematic use of social networks and cyberbullying and cybervictimisation in a sample of adolescents. A total of 1164 students in Compulsory Secondary Education and 1st year of Baccalaureate (M = 14.56; SD = 1.40) participated in the research. The instruments applied were the Questionnaire of Problematic Use of Social Networks and the Peer Bullying Screening to assess cyberbullying and cybervictimisation. Results showed positive and statistically significant correlations between problematic social network use and cyberbullying and cybervictimisation. Finally, the results obtained through logistic regression analysis showed that the probability of having a problematic use of social networks was 1.25 times higher as one unit in cybervictimisation increases. These results underline the importance of designing and implementing intervention programmes aimed at the responsible use of social networks and the prevention of cyberbullying and cybervictimisation in adolescents.
